VB Delegate Files Bill to Revoke Daughters of Confederacy Tax Status
Don Scott set to become first black Speaker of the House
A Virginia Beach politician is taking aim at the Virginia Daughters of the Confederacy’s tax status. Delegate Alex Askew (D) filed the bill in Richmond this week, and a hearing is expected later this month.
Virginia’s code explicitly grants tax exempt status to the group, angering some black lawmakers.
Democrats now control the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate. In the House, the first black Speaker, Delegate Don Scott, is set to be elected this week. Scott was a convicted felon who even served time in jail for drug charges before reforming himself.
But those realities have only strengthened his appeal within his caucus, colleagues say, and make him uniquely qualified to lead the General Assembly’s lower chamber.
