The Town of Bedford is selling off its four Wheat’s Valley parcels that run off into our water supply, according to multiple people familiar with situation. One of the interested buyers is a developer, prompting concern among neighboring property owners and others in the area.
Representatives of the Bedford Regional Water Authority say they have been left in the dark on the proposal. When the Town reverted from a City, its water infrastructure was transferred to the newly-formed Water Authority, but much of the land stayed with the Town in hopes it would make it harder for any future Council to sell the parcels.
That agreement was made in good faith between the Town, County and Water Authority, with all parties seeking to keep the land from being developed or harming the water supply.
Now, as concerns arise about the potential sale, some are speculating the Town will include deed restrictions to protect the reservoir or remove other deed problems altogether prior to the sale. When asked if that was the case, we got no response from Town officials.
The four parcels could be sold through a local realtor with expertise in the region, but nothing public has been announced as of today.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
